Who nibbled at my peanutbutter?

My mum got me this peanutbutter bird-feeder.
It has been hanging next to my livingroom window for weeks, and it remained untouched all this time.
I do see a lot of birds on / around my roofgarden, there are a lot of tomtits and great tits, there are sparrows, blackbirds, red robins, wrens, magpies and some jackdaws. Occasionally there are ringnecks, pigeons, seagulls and I have seen woodpeckers and jay birds as well!

I was really surprised to see something has finally been nibbling at the peanutbutter!
Now I am curious to find out who did it...

Sowing

Gardening season started!!

This week started off well;

First of all, I cleaned the vegetable beds at my allotment.
Together with mum we raked in 'home-made' compost.

ZAAIEN

Het Tuinseizoen is van start gegaan!

Deze week is goed begonnen;

After that was done, I seeded some vegs which can handle an early start (peas, carrots)

At home, I spend the morning rolling 'paper pots'. 230 in total...

I bought this wooden pot maker at a garden event last year. Making the paper pots is really easy, and.. free!
The paper dissolves once the seedlings are planted out in soil.

You start off with cutting strips of newspaper. Then you roll one strip around the pot maker, at the bottom side you leave approximately 1,5 or 2 centimeters of paper sticking out.

Then you fold the botom side that is sticking out  in.

After that you push and wiggle the rolled paper on the bottom part of the pot maker.

And there you have your little pot!

En klaar is het potje!

The only downside of making paper pots is....

Well, the making of paper pots turned my diner table into a little paper pot factory.
And filling them up turned my kitchen into a little nursery:

Filled with vegetable-, herb- and cottage flowers seeds!

Ofcourse I could not leave the seedtrays standing on my kitchen countertop, so I needed to find some space to place them...

Two in the kitchen / Twee in de keuken

One in the living room / Een in de woonkamer

Well... all I can do is water them regularly and the rest is up to mother nature..

Sakura

Soon the cherry trees (Prunus Serrulata) will start to blossom (Sakura) in Japan.
In Japan, traditionally, people will enjoy the "Hanami", which literally means 'blossom viewing'.
People will join in parks for picnics underneath the pink clouds of flowers.
Because the blossoming only lasts for only a week or two, and the trees start to blossom on different times spread over Japan, the japanese weather bureau issues forecast, or "Sakurazensen" to make sure nobody misses it.

Here in Holland we also have cherry trees, however not in the big masses you can find them in in Japan and I have not seen any blossom here yet. Therefore,  I made this little (30cm) doll.
I was fortunate to visit Japan a couple of times in the past, as I used to work for a japanese company. During one of my travels I bought some japanese fabrics. All these years I had the fabric stashed away in a plastic box. When I started making dolls again, I came across these fabrics again, and immediately got the inspiration for this doll.

I made her a "Yukata", which is a informal Kimono, out of the japanese fabric, printed with.... Sakura! (cherry blossoms)
Did you know there are various types of Kimono? Each style, colour or pattern reflects age, formality, maritial status, or occassion.
Also, a kimono ususally is worn with the front left side over the right. A kimono worn the other way around, means that the person (male or female) is mourning.

To complete her outfit I made her a simple  "Obi" (sash - waistband), which also come in dozens of different styles, with just as many ways to tie them.

In her hair she is wearing "Kanzashi" a traditional hair decoration, with dangling blossoms.

Underneath the yukata, she wears underwear with long pants and little crocheted shoes. Traditionally these should be wooden slippers, but that is a bit too difficult for me :-)

Kitchen talk

I have had my eyes set on this kitchen cart for quite a while, but for some reason I constantly postponed actual purchase...

IKEA Stenstorp

... a couple of days ago I found a second hand one on the internet, for almost half the original price!
We picked it up yesterday and here it is standing in my kitchen:

I thouroughly cleaned it, the oak "butchers block" top was stained a bit, so I lightly sanded it with one of those metal scouring sponges and oiled it.

... all stains dissapeared!
... alle vlekken zijn verdwenen!

So, I spend the entire morning rearranging and cleaning cabinets and shelves of the rest of the kitchen...
but am so happy with the results!

It almost looks like those kitchens in magazines, or on the internet..
Yesterday evening I found some kitchen inspiration on Pinterest and some blogs;
Just daydreaming.... in case one day I win the lottery...
So below photo's are (unfortunately) not my kitchen!

Gisteravond vond ik wat keuken inspiratie op Pinterest en in wat blogs;

My favorite pale blue  /  Lichtblauw, mijn favoriet.

White, zinc and wood: simple!  / Wit, zink en hout: Simpel!

Baby blue Smeg... mmmm Well, at least I have the same sink!
Baby blauwe Smeg... mmmmm Ik heb alvast dezelfde gootsteen!

Typical Dutch winter comfort food

A typical dutch winter dish: Hutspot (hotchpotch in english?)
Mashed winter-carrots, onions and potatoes with meatballs on the side and gravy... hmmmmm.

And for desert: Cooked pears.
Unfortunately not from pears from my own garden.. my 'Giesser Wildemann' pear tree skipped a year in fruiting..
So, slowely cooked pears with water, cinnamon and a good heap of sugar. My personal favorite is to add a splash of Port-wine.

The palest blue

I found this little pot of dwarf Irisses at my local supermarket this week.
They opened up quite quickly and they turned out to be my favorite blue color, pale greyish, greenish blue.
I have never had Irisses in a pot, indoors, and instantly they have become my favorite flower! The really are only 10 cm in height, and according to the information I found on internet they are fully hardy, so when they fade away (which I hope will not happen too soon) I think I'll plant them in a pot for the roofgarden, hoping they will pop up next year!

Like I said, I love pale blue, you can find it everywhere in my house:

The bed actually has a nice story behind it... For a long time I had been wanting this white bed by IKEA. But, IKEA stopped manufacturing the white version years ago. There was a black version with copper coloured knobs that they carried a little bit longer, but it also is not available for years now.
I found a black bed the same size as my matrasses second hand for only EUR 50,00 a couple of years ago. My mom and dad picked it up for me (the drive a van) and my dad and I hung the parts at his attic. I've sanded all the parts, painted it with primer and then painted it it this matte off white colour. When I moved to my current home a little over a year ago, it got some bumps and scratches, so it has a real 'vintage' look now.
The large chest behind it, I also found second hand. It used to be dark brown... painted it white!

My fist-ever hooky project, made about 3 years ago
Mijn allereerste haak projectje, ongeveer 3 jaar geleden gemaakt

My favorite coffee cup / Mijn favoriete koffie mok

Crocheted 'zpagetti' (jersey left overs from textile industry) poufs: fun to do!

Little 'Raspberry' Riding Hood

There still was wool left from knitting the little 'raspberry' vest, so I made her a little hood to go with it!

It is not going to happen...

De elfsteden-tocht

Well, this evening a meeting with the heads of the comittee was announced...
All the dutch press gathered in Leeuwarden, Fryslan's headcity...
The exitement was as if it was the election of a new pope...
Holland was waiting for black or white smoke...
Supersticious theories about Ducks (if they not quack, the tour will go on), Moles (the more heaps they make in the land, the colder it gets) and the Full moon (with Full moon and with New Moon the weather is about to change) kept the spirit up...

A minute ago, the officials announced that it is NOT going to take place.
The quality of the ice over the entire 200km track is not good enough and / or not safe enough to have the race this weekend.
As from sunday they expect temperatures to rise above zero...

little knitty

Yep... another 'Tataaaah' coming up....
I have knitted a little vest for THE doll
It's made of plant-dyed wool by 'pflanzenfaerberei Kroll' from Germany, which I purchased with Kamrin. The colour is called "Himbeer", german for raspberry...
It was my first attempt of knitting components and put them togheter; uptil now I only made socks, cowls and shawls in one piece (mostly in-the-round)

The sleeves I did knit in-the-round, on my tiny sock needles.

All pieces are assembled...

Alles zit aan elkaar...

A little crochet trim and a button... tataaaaaah!!

Een gehaakt randje en een knoop... tataaaaahh!!

Thank you all for your lovely comments on the doll and her clothes...
It is so lovely to see that I have readers on the Blog! And from almost every corner of the world... Wonderful!

Geweldig!

I am so hooked on the doll-and-doll-clothes making, that projects for 'myself' are tucked away in the knitting basket... I really should finish that warm cowl I started, as now is the time to wear it!
