Catching up 1: Chutney

Time to catch up!

Last October I followed a workshop in jam- and chutney making with Kitty Penninga.

I met Kitty last spring on the spring-fair at the Olmenhorst where she was selling her home made and sugarfree jams and chutney’s. Back then I stocked up on deliciousness’s and bought her recipe booklet as well. I gave sugerfree jam making a try with one of my bramble jam batches I made last autumn. For conservation Kitty uses honey, for thickening she uses pectin powder, sometimes dissolved in a small splash of liquor..

In oktober volgde ik een workshop jam- en chutney maken bij Kitty Penninga

Kitty stond afgelopen voorjaar op de voorjaarsfair bij de olmenhorst, waar ze haar zelfgemaakte en suikervrije jams en chutneys verkocht. Ik sloeg aardig wat zaligheden in en kocht ook haar recepten boekje. Zelf maakte ik later suikervrije bramenjam. Voor het conserveren gebruikt Kitty Honing en voor het geleren gerbruikt zij pectine poeder, soms opgelost in een beetje drank..

As I never made chutneys before, I wanted to learn all about it during a workshop.

During the workshop in a professional kitchen we made clementine-jam, quince-jam, cooking pear-chutney and pumpkin-chutney. We had a lot of fun working on the products and the results were delicious. Afterwards I went home heavily stocked: I can really recommend Kitty’s (…) workshops.

Ik had nooit chutney gemaakt, daar wilde ik het fijne van leren tijdens een workshop.

In de workshop, in een proffesionele keuken, maakten we mandarijnen-jam, kweeperen-jam, stoofperen-chutney en pompoen-chutney. Het was erg leuk om te doen en de resultaten waren heerlijk. Na afloop keerde ik volgeladen huiswaards: echt een aanrader, zo’n workshop bij Kitty!

In a magazine I found a recipe for carrotchutney, and.. coincidentally I still had some wintercarrots at the allotment

we harvested on a rainy Saturday afternoon. At home I scrubbed them vigorously and grated them in the magimix.

I altered the recipe and replaced sugar with honey. The results ? Delicious! (and free orange hands..)

In de buitenleven vond ik een recept voor wortelchutney en… toevallig had ik nog winterpenen staan in mijn volkstuin. Deze hebben we op een regenachtige zaterdag middag gerooid. Thuis heb ik ze goed geschrobt en ze geraspt in de Magimix. Ik heb het recept een beetje aangepast en de suiker vervangen door honing. Het resultaat? Heerlijk! (en gratis oranje handen….)

Brambles / Blackberries, I planted two tiny little plants two years ago and honeslty did not expect to ever be able to pick this many fruits.

This is already the fourth pick this season  and still there are loads of fruits left, that need to ripen .

 

Bramen; twee jaar geleden plantte ik twee piepkleine plantjes en eerlijk gezegd had ik niet verwacht er ooit zoveel fruit van te kunnen plukken.

Dit is al de vierde pluk dit seizoen en nog hangen er heel veel nog onrijpe bramen.

Gardening

Gardening should have a positive impact on one's mental health. It is supposed to be soothing, relaxing and a way to clear one's mind.
NOT TODAY... I got really annoyed with gardening today. Due to the contiuous wet weather we have, the weeds are really growing too fast to manage them, and on the other hand, the slugs are having a feast on my sowed and carefully planted-out vegetables. Frustrating..


Tuinieren

Normaal gesproken zou tuinieren een posistieve invloed hebben op iemands mentale gezondheid, het zou kalmerend, rustgevend en een manier om de gedachten vrij te maken moeten zijn.
MAAR VANDAAG NIET... Ik ben echt geirriteerd geraakt van het tuinieren vandaag. Door het aanhoudend natte weer, groeit het onkruid zo hard dat het niet meer bij te houden is, en aan de andere kant hebben de naatktslakken een feestmaal aan de door mij gezaaide, of voorzichting uitgeplante groenten. Frusterend...

The Zucchini I planted out for the second time this season, got eaten again!

A full weekend off; with my 'irregular-hours-job' such is a luxury!

Saturday
Saturday I went to the allotment; cleared the vegetable beds from weeds again, planted out beans and zuchini's (second attempt - hopefully the slugs will leave them alone this time) and mowed the grass.
It was still a bit stormy and now and then I had to shelter against the rain. Heavy winds had tortured the garden a bit the last days. Fortunately no serious damages, just the peas that were windswept and the plum tree lost a third of it's crop.

EN VOOR JE HET WEET IS HET ZONDAGAVOND

Een heel weekend vrij; met mijn 'onregelmatige-tijden-baan' zoiets is een luxe!

Zaterdag
Zaterdag ben ik naar mijn volkstuintje gegaan; de groente bedden weer ontdaan van onkruid, bonen en courgettes uitgeplant (tweede poging - hopelijk blijven de naaktslakken er deze keer vanaf) en het gras gemaaid.
Het was nog een beetje winderig en zo af en toe moest ik even schuilen tegen de regen. Sterke wind heeft de tuin geplaagd de afgelopen dagen. Gelukkig geen ernstige schade, alleen de doperwten die platgewaaid waren en de pruimenboom heeft een derde van de pruimen verloren.

In the evening I picked up a knitty project, WITH CABLES !!! I recently 'discovered' cable knitting, I always thought it to be too dificult for me to understand; but once you start and get used to the cable needle; it is actually just as simple as knit-purl.
As always, my cat curled up against me...

's-Avonds heb ik er een brei projectje bij gepakt, MET KABELS !!! Onlangs ondekte ik kabels breien, ik heb altijd gedacht dat dat te ingewikkeld voor mij zou zijn, maar als je eenmaal begint en gewend raakt aan de kabel naald; is het net zo simpel als recht-averecht
Zoals altijd, kroop ook nu mijn kat tegen me aan...

Sunday
Last tuesday I bought one of those  'Clooney-Coffee' machines (Nespresso) I was given generous gift coupon which I wanted to spend it on something that I normally just would not buy for myself
So this morning started with cofffee-deliciousness...

Zondag
Afgelopen dinsdag heb ik een 'Clooney-Koffie' apparaat (Nespresso) gekocht. Ik had een leuke waardebon gekregen, waar ik iets van wilde aanschaffen dat ik anders niet voor mezelf zou kopen.
Dus, vanmorgen begon met koffie-lekkers...

And this afternoon, after some housekeeping, I completed a 3Km run-walk-run around a small (artificial) lake nereby!

En vanmiddag, na wat huishoudelijke taken, heb ik een rondje van 3Km rennen-wandelen-rennen om een recreatieplas in de buurt gemaakt!

Allotment-green

It has been quite a wet month; may.
And it shows in the garden.
Slugs ate my little zucchini and pumpkin plants... entirely!
And... grasses and weeds grow faster than the blink of an eye!

VOLKSTUIN-GROEN
De maand Mei is best nat geweest.
en dat kun je zin in de tuin.
Naaktslakken hebben mijn kleine courgette- en pompoen plantjes opgepeuzeld... compleet meet wortel en al!
En... grassen en onkruid groeien sneller dan dat je met je ogen kunt knipperen!

This is a small area at the back of the allotment. Is supposed to be a wildflower meadow, I have sown a wildflower mix, but so far all that has come up is these grasses that I did not sow!

Dit is een klein stukje achter mijn tuin. Het moet een wilde bloemen weide voorstellen, ik had een wilde bloemen mengsel gezaaid, maar alles wat opkomt zijn deze grassen, die ik nou juist niet had gezaaid!

Volkstuin - groen!







The green green grasses (and herbs) of (at) home...

I have been busy with at the allotment and at my roofgarden at home the past days.

The roofgarden is slowely turning into a small edible garden...

I started last week with cleaning the floor, removed all tiles and re-laid them, scrubbed them...

Then I planted the balcony planters with quite a unusual combination; Herbs and ornamental grasses;

Ik ben de laatste dagen druk geweest op de volkstuin en op het dakterras thuis.

Het dakterras is langzaam aan het veranderen in een eetbaar tuintje...

Ik ben vorige week begonnen met het schoonmaken van de vloer, alle tegels eraf- en weer terug gelegd en daarna flink geschrobt...

Toen heb ik de hangbakken gevuld met een aparte combinatie: kruiden en siergrassen;



Re-planted the 'Chocolate Mint' that I wrote about in this post , planted new 'Swiss Mint' and ' Maroccan Mint'... for TEA!

De chocolade Munt waar ik hier over schreef verpot, nieuwe 'Zwitserse Munt' en 'Marokkaanse Munt' geplant.. voor de THEE!

Replaced some plants in my mini-tub-pond (not edible, but I love a water feature, especially with my "Whitchesballs" from Hooimaker ;

The Hosta's are showing their little noses again and the clematis is about 1m in height now:

Then I remembered to check on my solitary bee- house..

Toen dacht ik eraan eens naar mijn metselbijen huis te kijken..

Here a little bucket full of spring, there are bulbs in there which still need to start flowering...

Een emmer vol met lente, er zitten bollen in die nog uit moeten komen...

All in all, I am quite happy with my 'outside-space'. All that is lacking is a sunscreen (trying to save up for one) and I would really love to make a bench from reclaimed wood, like these;

Al met al ben ik bet gelukkig met mijn buiten. Wat alleen nog mist is een zonnescherm (ik probeer te sparen voor een) en ik zou heel graag een bank van steigerhout willen maken, zoals deze;
