Sakura

 



Soon the cherry trees (Prunus Serrulata) will start to blossom (Sakura) in Japan.

In Japan, traditionally, people will enjoy the "Hanami", which literally means 'blossom viewing'.

People will join in parks for picnics underneath the pink clouds of flowers.

Because the blossoming only lasts for only a week or two, and the trees start to blossom on different times spread over Japan, the japanese weather bureau issues forecast, or "Sakurazensen" to make sure nobody misses it.

Eerdaags beginnen de kersenbomen (Prunus Serrulata) te bloeien (Sakura) in Japan.

In Japan wordt dit traditioneel geviert met de "Hanami", wat letterlijk 'bloesems kijken' betekent. Mensen komen in de parken samen om te picknikken onder de wolken van roze bloesems.

Omdat de bloei maar een week of twee aanhoudt, en de bomen op verschillende tijdstippen verspreid over japan beginnen te bloeien, doet het Japanse meteorologische instituut voorspellingen, of "Sakurazensen", opdat niemand het mist.

Here in Holland we also have cherry trees, however not in the big masses you can find them in in Japan and I have not seen any blossom here yet. Therefore,  I made this little (30cm) doll.
I was fortunate to visit Japan a couple of times in the past, as I used to work for a japanese company. During one of my travels I bought some japanese fabrics. All these years I had the fabric stashed away in a plastic box. When I started making dolls again, I came across these fabrics again, and immediately got the inspiration for this doll.

Hier in Nederland groeien ook kersenbomen, hoewel niet in de grote hoeveelheden als in Japan. Hier heb ik nog geen bloesems gezien. Daarom heb ik dit kleine (30cm) popje gemaakt.
Ik ben bevoorrecht geweest Japan een paar keer te kunnen bezoeken, omdat ik voorheen voor een japans bedrijf werkte. Tijdens een van mijn reizen heb ik wat japanse stofjes meegebracht. Al die jaren lagen de stofjes opgeborgen in een plastic krat. Toen ik weer begon met poppen maken, kwam ik deze stofjes weer tegen en direct werd ik geinspireerd voor het maken van dit popje.

Did you know there are various types of Kimono? Each style, colour or pattern reflects age, formality, maritial status, or occassion.
Also, a kimono ususally is worn with the front left side over the right. A kimono worn the other way around, means that the person (male or female) is mourning.

Ik heb een "Yukata", een informele kimono, van de japanse stof, bedrukt met.... Sakura! (kersenbloesems) voor haar gemaakt.
Wist je dat er verschillende soorten kimono zijn? Elk model, kleur of patroon heeft een eigen betekenis, zoals leeftijd, burgelijke stand, formaliteit of gelegenheid.
Ook wordt een kimono normaal gesproken gedragen met de linker voorkant over de rechter. Als een kimono andersom gedragen wordt, betekent dat dat de persoon (man of vrouw) in rouw is.

To complete her outfit I made her a simple  "Obi" (sash - waistband), which also come in dozens of different styles, with just as many ways to tie them.

Om haar outfit compleet te maken, heb ik er een simpele "Obi" (taille-band) bijgemaakt, die ook in heel veel soorten voorkomen, met net zo veel verschillende manieren om ze dicht te knopen.



In her hair she is wearing "Kanzashi" a traditional hair decoration, with dangling blossoms.

In haar haar draagt ze een "Kanzashi", een traditionele haar decoratie, met bungelende bloesempjes.

Underneath the yukata, she wears underwear with long pants and little crocheted shoes. Traditionally these should be wooden slippers, but that is a bit too difficult for me :-)

Onder de yukata draagt ze ondergoed met een lange broek en kleine gehaakte schoentjes. Traditioneel zou ze houten slippertjes moeten dragen, maar dat werd me een beetje te moeilijk :-)
